Alabama Scores College Football Championship

Preview — Jan 12, 2016

The iconic College Football Championship Trophy is awarded after a thrilling game.

The College Football National Championship trophy, designed by Pentagram's Michael Gericke, was awarded to the University of Alabama last night, January 12. In an incredible and hard-fought game, Alabama’s Crimson Tide triumphed over Clemson 45-40 at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Gericke and his team designed the logo and contemporary trophy for the new College Football Playoff system and the National Championship in 2015. The logo and trophy’s two gold brackets represent the coming together of the best teams in the NCAA's Division 1 playoff system and form the shape of a virtual football. Building on the identity, the graphics were again fundamental elements in shaping every aspect of a mega sports event that combines the excitement of a tournament with a championship game on par with the Super Bowl.

Gericke also designed the environmental graphics for University of Phoenix Stadium, the home of the NFL's Arizona Cardinals, which hosted the 2008 and 2015 Super Bowls.
