Preview — Oct 05, 2026

The collaboration takes inspiration from the classic song ‘Manhattan’ and benefits 92NY.

We’ll have Manhattan! Introducing a wearable love letter to New York City, designed by Pentagram’s Michael Bierut and Talia Cotton of Cotton Design.

Echo New York, the fashion and accessories brand known for its printed silk scarves, is marking its centennial with Echo100, a collection of limited-edition scarves created by 100 leading voices across design, art, fashion and culture. Each design is produced in a numbered edition of 100, with $100 from every sale donated to a nonprofit selected by its creator.

Bierut and Cotton collaborated on an all-typographic scarf benefiting 92NY, the cultural institution they rebranded in 2022. The design draws on “Manhattan,” Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart’s classic 1925 song and its lyrical tour of New York, from the Bronx to Bowling Green and Canarsie to Coney Island, with the song’s words woven into the scarf.

The scarf’s typography is drawn directly from the 92NY wordmark, set in 92NY Didi, a custom typeface developed by Jeremy Mickel of MCKLTYPE for the organization’s identity. 92NY Didi is a digitized extension of the French neoclassical Didot family, inspired by Freeman Craw’s 1966 interpretation for CBS and Tom Carnese’s ITC Didi, drawn four years later.

The 92NY logo, however, appears nowhere on the scarf. Instead, the design reproduces the place names from the song in a black-and-white pattern inspired by the textiles of midcentury master Alexander Girard.
