Pentagram

Paula Scher at Texas Tech University

Events — Feb 28, 2023

Paula Scher will be speaking at Texas Tech University on Tuesday, March 7th.

Pentagram celebrated its 50th Anniversary recently and Texas Tech University (Austin partner DJ Stout’s alma mater) is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year. To commemorate both landmark occasions, Stout invited his great friend, mentor and fellow Pentagram partner Paula Scher to Lubbock to kick off an annual speaker series at the university. Scher will be the inaugural speaker on March 7th at the International Cultural Center on the Tech campus. The event, sponsored by Pentagram Austin, sold out quickly.

Stout attended Texas Tech in the late 70s and had a life-changing experience with an influential graphic design teacher named Frank Cheatham who had worked for Saul Bass in Los Angeles. After graduation, Cheatham regularly invited Stout back to talk to his design classes, and through that connection he met Carla Tedeschi and Dirk Fowler, two exceptional design professors at the university.

Stout was named Art Director of Texas Monthly in 1987 and became the first Texas Tech University graduate to do so. Since then, three Red Raiders have followed in succession to serve as Art Directors of the award-winning, regional publication: Scott Dadich, T.J. Tucker and Emily Kimbro. Because of this legacy, Tedeschi and Fowler have continued to improve and evolve the Texas Tech design curriculum to include an emphasis on publication design.

One of their star students, Davian-Lynn Hopkins, is now a talented, valued designer at Pentagram Austin and he designed the commemorative poster for Paula’s once in a century visit to Lubbock, Texas.
