Thames & Hudson have published Vinyl. Album. Cover. Art., a complete catalogue of the work of celebrated design agency Hipgnosis.

The 320-page volume is the first to publish all 373 of Hipgnosis’ album covers, including those for Pink Floyd, 10cc, Black Sabbath, Peter Gabriel, The Police, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, and Paul McCartney. The book features commentary and annotations by Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell and the late Storm Thorgerson, and also features an ‘Intro’ by Peter Gabriel and an ‘Outro’ by Pentagram’s Harry Pearce entitled ‘Graphic Design’s Shamen’.

Pearce first connected with Powell when designed the identity for Pink Floyd Records, and delighted to be asked to submit a short essay detailing his views of Hipgnosis’ work.

Pearce writes, “Looking through the contents of this book has been an emotional ride. I was amazed to find a visual diary of much of the music of my teenage years and twenties. These wonderful designs had lived with me, coloured my view of the music and taught me the visceral power of graphic storytelling - a lesson I’ve never forgotten.”
