‘25 Years at the Public: A Love Story’

Paula Scher documents her ongoing collaboration with The Public Theater in a new monograph.

The book is the most comprehensive survey of Scher’s work for The Public to date, collecting hundreds of her posters, along with materials related to the identity and campaigns.

The Public Theater branding has influenced much of the graphic design created for theatrical promotion and for cultural institutions in general.

A special edition of the book comes complete with a folded set of mini reproductions of Shakespeare in the Park posters.

Retrospective: Shakespeare in the Park

In 1954, impresario Joe Papp began a summer tradition of staging free outdoor performances of Shakespeare, inaugurating the Public Theater’s beloved Shakespeare in the Park festival. Pentagram partner Paula Scher, whose relationship with the Public spans four decades, has designed a new identity for the series for thirty consecutive summers. Each campaign is customized to the season’s theme, creating a highly visible graphic vocabulary for outdoor advertising, social media, and on-site signage.
