‘Doris Duke’s Shangri La’

Book Design

Book to accompany the exhibition "Doris Duke’s Shangri La: Architecture, Landscape and Islamic Art," which looks at this unique estate and its collections.

Perched on the Pacific Ocean with views of Honolulu’s Diamond Head, Shangri La, the Hawaiian estate of the heiress Doris Duke (1912-1993), is a visionary fantasia that melds a modern sense of form with the tropical landscape, as well as art and decorative elements from throughout the Islamic world. To accompany a traveling exhibition about this unique property and its collections, Pentagram designed Doris Duke’s Shangri La: A House in Paradise, a catalogue published by Rizzoli.

The book features the full portfolio of Tim Street-Porter’s new photographs of the complex, as well as archival documents and historical photographs related to the development of the house and collection. The book opens with a perforated page inspired by the jali screens of the house, and the cover is debossed for a sense of texture.
