‘Malformed’

Design for a book featuring Adam Vorhees's still-life images of brains from the Texas State Mental Hospital.

A damaged label (left) dates back to 1952.
Text by Alex Hannaford tells the story of the former Texas State Lunatic Asylum.

Most of the faded labels on the jars included case numbers that referenced medical records, and finding those records and gaining access to them became the photographer’s second obsession.

Several dyed brain segments used for teaching.
The book’s designers composed several of the spreads into visually dynamic, gallery layouts.
Multiple brains wrapped in gauze.
