MUBI Sonic Ident

A sonic ident for the independent film streaming service.

Yuri used several techniques that pay homage to the heritage and legacy of both cinema and music. By referencing historical moments, he evokes a strong image in the ears and minds of the very discerning audience who use and love MUBI.

A commercial reel to reel tape recorder that was used to a add lo-fi quality and collaged sound to the ident.
Tape used in the reel to reel machine, making incisions and splices to create new audio combinations.
A technique created by Norman McLaren that exploits the use of a sound-track on a film strip that can be drawn on with a pen to create dynamic and bold percussive sounds.
Yuri Suzuki plays a Theremin on the ident, which adds an evocative and eerie quality, similar to that of an opera singer.

The highly expressive nature of strings gives the ident a great depth of emotion and character. This sits beautifully above the experimental textures provided by the tape sounds.

Retrospective: London Design Festival

London Design Festival has been an annual celebration of the power of creativity for over 20 years. Since 2008, Pentagram partner Domenic Lippa has served as the LDF’s creative director, responsible every September for the design of a new visual identity. By inventively remixing a few key elements — typography, a signature red (“the colour of London”), and LDF's simple monogram — the program unifies hundreds of events while reaffirming London’s status as a global design capital.
