The book describes Porto Montenegro’s story so far, and introduces the next decade of its development.
The number of large yachts under construction has more than tripled over the past ten years, with nearly 200 super vessels being delivered to Europe annually. This growing popularity has brought with it greater need for deep water berths, a demand that the Western Mediterranean can no longer meet. In its place, Adriactic berths are becoming increasingly popular, with Porto Montenegro leading the charge.
With a current offering of 450 berths and expansion plans in motion, Porto Montenegro aims to become Europe’s most comprehensive nautical facility, and homeport, for yachts of any size. Founded almost a decade ago - following Montenegro’s independence from Serbia - it is the brainchild of Canadian gold mining mogul Peter Munk, with investors including Lord Jacob Rothschild and Bernard Arnault, founder of luxury conglomerate Louis Vuitton-Möet Hennessey.
To celebrate its tenth year, Pentagram asked to create a book to describe Porto Montenegro’s story so far, and introduce the next decade of its development. Navigate outlines how the location was transformed from a collection of fishing villages, to a Russian submarine naval base, and finally to a super premium marina.
The book is split into four sections. The first introduces the location and its dramatic landscape. The second chapter recounts Montenegro’s global history as a port serving imperial powers, including the Romans, the Venetians, the Ottomans and the Austrians. Montenegro’s Venetian connection is celebrated on the book’s endpapers with a map of the Bay of Kotor by 17th Century Venetian cartographer Vincenzo Coronelli featuring on the inside front cover.
The third and fourth sections outline the development’s journey to date, which include private residences, a five-star Regent Hotel, restaurants, shops and a private lido and nightclub. Finally it describes the future developments - including an expansion to 850 berths, new residences, and an upscale casino.
