There is a romance in getting lost, and entering a hedge maze in a garden is a kind of abandonment. It is not the same as being lost in the wilderness; it is a contract that ends with being found, however many wrong turns are taken along the way.

Designed and authored by Pentagram, ‘The Maze: A Labyrinthine Compendium’ explores the curious circumstances behind sixty real and fictional mazes from across the world.
Specially commissioned illustrations by Thibaud Hérem represent 60 real and imagined mazes, including the stone Troy Town Labyrinth on St Agnes, Isles of Scilly, where shipwrecked sailors were buried as it was thought their bad luck brought good fortune; the secrets behind Stanley Kubrick’s Baroque style maze in The Shining; and the zoomorphic Las Líneas de Nazca in Peru.
Each maze is accompanied by a fascinating and witty short history, as well as a bird’s eye view, so that readers can make their own journey.
