With signature designs like babydoll dresses and grunge-inspired looks, fashion designer Anna Sui helped define the style of the 1990s—a watershed decade for fashion, music, and pop culture. She revisits this influential era in The Nineties x Anna Sui, a new book edited by Ileen Gallagher, designed by Pentagram partner Abbott Miller and team, and published by Rizzoli.
The book weaves an oral history of Sui and her cultural impact, told through interviews and commentary from Sui herself as well as friends and collaborators such as Christy Turlington, Sofia Coppola (pictured on the cover with her brother Roman Coppola and Zoe Cassavetes), Linda Evangelista, and Marc Jacobs.
The design approach for the book draws on the sensibility of magazine and editorial typography, structuring a series of visual stories that highlight the themes running through Sui’s work in the 1990s. Chapters are rendered as headline-style openers like "Babydoll,” “Preppy,” “Grunge,” and “Vintage,” foregrounding her varied stylistic preoccupations. Sui’s signature black-and-lavendar palette are featured on the high-gloss binding of the book.
Pentagram collaborated closely with Sui and editor Ileen Gallagher on the photo selection, resulting in a richly illustrated volume that includes runway shots, design sketches, backstage Polaroids, dresser cards, press clippings, show invites, fabric swatches, and even playlists.
