‘The Work of Art’

Design of a book by Adam Moss exploring the artistic process through a series of in-depth conversations with creators.

The book immerses readers in the artistic process, weaving together interviews and journal entries, sketches, outtakes and other ephemera to break down all the work that goes into making great art.

Each chapter is treated like an academic journal, with the reproductions of chaotic scribbles, marked-up contact sheets and half-finished thoughts arranged like treasured artifacts.

The challenge for the designers was maintaining a strong connection between text and image, with arrows breaking from the copy to refer to specific examples.

Retrospective: Shakespeare in the Park

In 1954, impresario Joe Papp began a summer tradition of staging free outdoor performances of Shakespeare, inaugurating the Public Theater’s beloved Shakespeare in the Park festival. Pentagram partner Paula Scher, whose relationship with the Public spans four decades, has designed a new identity for the series for thirty consecutive summers. Each campaign is customized to the season’s theme, creating a highly visible graphic vocabulary for outdoor advertising, social media, and on-site signage.
