‘Pentagram drew directly from the architecture of Msheireb Properties, and the result is a naming that honours both our heritage and our vision for what this district is becoming’, Eng. Ali Al Kuwari, CEO, Msheireb Properties.
Sada and Mada were born in Arabic. Mada suggests range, reach and possibility. It became the name of the maker’s space, a place for experimentation, learning and artistic growth. Sada, meaning echo, became the name of the event and exhibition space, the place where ideas are amplified, shared and experienced by others.
The result is more than a naming exercise. It is a carefully structured brand ecosystem, one that transforms two buildings into a connected narrative about creativity itself. Through language, architecture and strategy, Sada and Mada embody the journey from idea to impact, helping Doha Design District define not only where creativity happens, but how it moves through a community.
Doha Design District (DDD), is Qatar’s premier hub for design, innovation, and collaboration, located at the heart of Msheireb Downtown, Doha. Its director, Dana Kazic approached Pentagram with a challenge: how to introduce two distinct spaces within the district while strengthening, rather than fragmenting, the equity of the parent brand, DDD. The task was to name and brand two spaces, a maker’s space dedicated to making, experimentation and artistic development; and an event space to become a destination for exhibitions, events and public engagement. Positioned opposite one another within the district, the two spaces were conceived as twins, each with a different role but part of the same creative vision.
Pentagram began by defining the brand architecture in order to create a system in which DDD would remain the central hub for design, while the new spaces developed identities strong enough to stand on their own, and connect to the wider ecosystem. The relationship had to allow equity to move in all directions: from DDD to the sub-brands, between the sub-brands themselves, between languages, and back again into the wider district.
The naming process explored ideas from letter repetitions connected to the DDD symbol, to Arabic words that had a spatial dimension as well as easy sonorous pronunciations. The new names had to feel intrinsically linked, two halves of a single conversation.
Together they describe the full creative cycle: from creation to communication, from exploration to expression. One space generates ideas; the other gives them resonance.
The naming also established a powerful spatial and symbolic relationship. What begins in Mada finds its audience in Sada. What is made in one space echoes in the other. The two names are distinct, yet inseparable, connected through rhythm, sound and meaning. Both names carried the letter D, from the symbol DDD, in lower case the symbol was inspired by the architecture of Msheireb. The visual iteration adopted the form of the D, and created more letterforms also inspired by the architecture, extending the system with a memorable DNA.
The identity system reinforced this relationship through a shared visual DNA derived from the architecture of Msheireb and the existing Doha Design District brand. Both names were designed as complementary sub-brands and endorsed by the DDD symbol, ensuring that every interaction strengthened the wider ecosystem. Rather than creating standalone entities competing for attention, the system built a family of brands that could grow together while remaining unmistakably part of Doha Design District.
As Eng. Ali Al Kuwari, CEO of Msheireb Properties, explains:
“Sada and Mada reflect the ambition at the heart of Doha Design District, to build a creative ecosystem that is authentically Qatari and genuinely world-class. Pentagram drew directly from the architecture of Msheireb Properties, and the result is a naming that honours both our heritage and our vision for what this district is becoming.”
For Dana Kazic, Director of Doha Design District, the success of the project lies in how naturally the names capture the purpose of each space and their relationship to one another:
“Sada and Mada are something I am truly proud of, they are ours, conceived for our community, our makers, our stories. These spaces hold the full creative journey: what begins in Mada, in the making and the exploring, finds its voice in Sada, in the showing and the sharing. Pentagram created the names and brand identity, and in doing so, captured exactly what these spaces are and what we are building here.”
