YouMe Kyoto Triennale

Brand identity for a major new cultural event in Kyoto, Japan.

Kyoto‘s inaugural Triennale will provide a place to foster new encounters and innovations in craftsmanship, and encourage people from different cultures with shared passions to grow through conversation and collaboration.

The symbol can appear empty as well as solid, filled with images, textures or lines, and embossed onto surfaces or printed on fabric. This endlessly flexible approach is designed to incorporate the Godai (五大), which are the five classical elements in Japanese philosophy: earth, water, fire, wind and void.

The symbol is joined by a wordmark set in a monospaced typeface. Neither Eastern or Western in style and based on form not ornament, it draws on the philosophical values of simplicity, restraint and honest form. Its even rhythm and balanced structure offer harmony and precision without imposing any particular visual style.

Every element of the Triennale has been designed to express the same underlying philosophy: that art, craft and design are most meaningful when they come together through making, conversation and collaboration.

The logo appears again in three-dimensional form as both framed and solid structures which appear in the gardens themselves. These join other two- and three-dimensional wayfinding elements which will be installed across the site.
