The word magazine comes to us from an ancient Arabic word meaning storehouse. A magazine is just that: an easily accessible place to compile ideas, information and images. And a good editor, working with talented designers, can combine those elements in a way that creates a place that readers will return to again and again.
Editorial design requires a skillful balance between theme and variations. A publication must present a welcoming, even familiar, setting for stories that in turn unfold in new and surprising ways, page by page, issue by issue. This is true whether the context is a daily newspaper, a literary journal, a special-interest monthly, or an institutional report. Digital destinations can deploy motion and video in ever more engaging ways. Print publications, no matter how threatened by changes in the marketplace, not just refuse to surrender but continue to vividly demonstrate their lasting value.

Because of my editorial background I believe that everything we do is about storytelling. Whether it’s a design or a package, it needs to tell you a story. It needs to tell you something.

Editorial work matters! People read! And when editorial material of all kinds is well designed and well written, it’s a thing of beauty.
