‘Brasil! Brasil! The Birth of Modernism’

Graphics and film for the Royal Academy’s major exhibition on the birth of Brazilian Modernism.

Artists were adapting and defining contemporary trends, embracing international influences to create a new type of modern art informed by the vibrant cultures, identities and landscapes of Brazil.

The team’s graphic approach uses super graphics to emphasise this bold and pioneering period in Brazilian art. The logo is expressive, forming the shape of the Brazilian flag through its typographic arrangement.

Pentagram’s intro film takes over the central lobby of Burlington House and is a tapestry of images and sounds with colour treatments that celebrate the vibrant and intense cultural mix of Brazil.

The soundtrack extracted elements from nature, urban landscape, voices from street markets, TV news and musical notes from local composers of many styles.

Altogether, the work is a celebration of Brazilian culture and the context that inspired the flourishing of such a progressive and exuberant art movement.

Retrospective: London Design Festival

London Design Festival has been an annual celebration of the power of creativity for over 20 years. Since 2008, Pentagram partner Domenic Lippa has served as the LDF’s creative director, responsible every September for the design of a new visual identity. By inventively remixing a few key elements — typography, a signature red (“the colour of London”), and LDF's simple monogram — the program unifies hundreds of events while reaffirming London’s status as a global design capital.
