“The Four Seasons” is a Netflix comedy miniseries from “30 Rock” writers-producers Tina Fey, Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield. Adapted from Alan Alda’s 1981 hit romantic comedy, the eight-episode show tracks the decades-long friendship between three married couples over a year––the four seasons of the title––and what happens when one divorces, complicating their tradition of quarterly weekend getaways. Along with Fey, the cast includes Steve Carell, Will Forte, Colman Domingo, Kerri Kenney-Silver and Marco Calvani.
Pentagram designed the logo and title sequence for the show, reuniting with Fey after working together on the identities and title sequences for her other series including “30 Rock,” “Girls5Eva,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Mr. Mayor” and “Great News.” Like the original “The Four Seasons” film, the series draws its title from the four concerti composed by Vivaldi.
Fey wanted the logo to feel like a “warm hug”––reflecting the show’s gentle, good-natured humor and appealing mix of comedy and drama––while also nodding to the 70s-80s roots of the original and the period typography of its logo. The curvy lettering feels natural and organic, swelling with graceful swooping ligatures. The title sequence divides the screen into four quadrants, one for each season, with the logo and the season name at the center. The type is surrounded by dramatic flourishes that branch out, grow and bloom within each quadrant, in delicate linework that nods to the ornamental decoration of classical sheet music covers.
Each of the four seasons takes place over two episodes, following the couples as they go through life changes. Within each of the eight title sequences contains an “Easter egg” based on a specific plot point, giving the viewers a little surprise with each episode.
