‘Watch This Space’

Book Design

A book examining the screen and its impact on society, the self and culture.

‘Watch This Space’ examines screens and their impact on society, the self and culture. The book—a limited edition collaboration between author Francesca Gavin and Pentagram—questions what the screen is, its function and how it shapes our experience, eyes and emotions.

Offering an in-depth analysis of the device that has become an extension of our modern bodies, ‘Watch This Space’ presents the screen as the defining object of the twenty-first century. Chapters of the book are dedicated to the political implications of the screen, from social media data gathering to Donald Trump, as well as the representation of the screen in contemporary art.

Pentagram's design replicates the materiality of a screen-clad device, with a circuit-inspired spine connecting the book’s hard acrylic, screen-like covers. Arial Narrow was selected for the book's type, in reference to the estimated 1.5 billion computers that run the Arial font family.

The book was printed by Boss Print Ltd using Vivid Colour™, their new five colour process which adds violet to CMYK combined with stochastic imaging, creating a near photographic definition image.
